About
Authentic Films is a documentary studio run by Matt Reed, an Australian filmmaker with thirty years of experience.
How the studio works
Matt works alone, or with one other person. The small footprint is part of the method. It keeps the room calm, the budget honest, and gives the people in front of the camera the time they need to relax and speak as themselves. No script, no lights, no production crew.
The studio is based in South West Queensland and works remotely across regional and metro Australia. Matt self produces each project, handling research, scheduling, filming, direction and edit. This keeps coordination simple for the commissioning organisation and removes the overhead of a separate production team.
The studio takes a small number of long term projects each year. Each one begins with time spent learning the program properly before filming starts. This is what allows the films to translate complex or technical work into something a non-specialist will watch and trust.
Background
Matt came to documentary filmmaking through photojournalism. That background still shapes the way the work is made: comfortable with people who are not used to being on camera, attentive to the unspoken parts of a story, and unfussy about the conditions of the shoot.
Over thirty years, the studio has worked across community, health, First Nations, editorial, and organisational settings, with recent work focused on government-funded environmental and agricultural programs.
